Video: Changing Health IT Vendors

FCP’s Brian Hill says hospitals should do periodic evaluations to know when it’s time to switch vendors. While it’s important to review deliverables, it’s also important to interview current staff to see what type of interactions they’ve had with the vendor. Brian says staff interaction can make a big difference. If your hospital staff is happy, the end-user will be happy and everybody wins.

What methods do you use to evaluate your HIT vendor?

Find a way to go to HIMSS every year for the rest of your healthcare career!

We all know the power of networking in our careers and career opportunities, yet I am amazed at how many people choose to not take advantage of the most effective healthcare networking and education opportunity available each year at HIMSS. People think it is just an opportunity to see old friends, meet new ones and listen to vendor vaporware. WOW what a concept.  Especially since EVERY person you meet has chosen the same occupation as you and there is a great chance that EVERYONE you meet will have career challenges in common, friends in common, vendor challenges and contacts in common, career opportunities in common, etc. Continue reading

Video: HIMSS Over the Years

Carter Groome says he’s been attending HIMSS conferences over 15 years and his favorite part is that HIMSS is like an industry reunion. At HIMSS, you run into clients, former colleagues, and industry partners. Because HIMSS is the biggest conference of the year, there is a lot of preparation and Carter believes the event has become more of a business to business conference. In earlier years, there were a lot of opportunities to present to hospitals and providers, but that has changed. Carter also says HIMSS is a good place to pick up on the latest health IT trends.

What is your favorite part of HIMSS?

Video: Assessing ICD-10 Readiness

Mark Scherling says healthcare providers can assess ICD-10 readiness by looking at a vendor’s plan to become compliant. For a vendor to remain viable, it must become compliant by October 2013. Look at the vendor’s roadmap, plan, and how it is going to partner with your hospital. Mark says reviewing the vendor’s milestone dates and what it means for your organization is also important.

How else do you assess a vendor’s ICD-10 readiness?

Is Your HIT Resume Drowning in Jargon?

We’re all guilty. Jargon is ubiquitous in our writing and cutting back is as hard as turning down a piece of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. It seems even harder in the healthcare IT field because we’re combining two notoriously buzzword heavy fields. Phrases like synergy, space, and “outside the box” are just the beginning of overused and empty sayings. Don’t get me wrong, I think jargon has its place, but just like sugar has its place in food, we all need to cut back, especially in our resumes.   Continue reading

Video: Personality Counts in HIT Consulting

Brian Hill says hospitals should look for health IT consultants with application experience or subject matter expertise. Personality is also an important component. The healthcare IT consultant must come into an organization and make an immediate impact without disrupting the overall culture of the hospital. FCP works to find a good personality fit for each hospital it works with – someone who can blend into the environment and do a great job.

What personality traits make a good HIT consultant?
