Every week it seems there is a news item about a major healthcare security breach. Just recently we learned about the breach at Emory Healthcare (Emory Healthcare loses records for 315K patients, including CEO’s). Whether a physical security breach or a data breach involving hackers or other forms of electronic intrusion/surveillance, we know that the threats are real and pervasive. Last week, I hosted an ACHE panel discussion about privacy and security and there were … Continue reading →

Last week, I hosted an ACHE panel discussion about privacy and security and there were a few key points that were revelations to me:

Passwords are obsolete. Security experts believe that multi-factor authentication is essential to prevent illegal access to patient data in a healthcare setting. Our experts suggested that in addition to the password (something you know), you need to be required to present a smart card/token on your personal device (something you have) and/or biometric marker (something you are) to access protected patient data.

On-going Policy Training and Communication are essential. They ensure that you lay the groundwork for effective privacy and security control. It figures that Emory Healthcare reported that it will strengthen and clarify existing policies to better protect patient information across the system.

As federal and state oversight attention grows, healthcare professionals must recognize the risks and strive for the secure and effective treatment of our patients.

One of the most rewarding experiences I have as a member of the healthcare information technology consulting community is watching individuals, who decide for the first time in their career, to try the consulting lifestyle and end up loving it. Choosing to join the consulting ranks is a major decision as it generally changes everything about a person’s daily routine. Deciding to go into consulting is a stressful time, with a huge leap of faith, both in terms of the company that you choose to entrust with your reputation and career and the impact it has on your lifestyle. The exciting part for me is seeing someone who does all their due diligence, takes the leap of faith and ends up loving consulting as their career. It is so fulfilling to have someone comment, “this is the best career move I ever made and I am so happy that I made this decision”.

Moving into any new career and lifestyle has its challenges and taking the time to find the right company to match your expectations for how you want to be treated and how you want “your” clients to be treated is key. For seasoned consultants the one thing that I find most often as the ultimate satisfaction in their careers is the many great people they have met who have now become lifelong friends and colleagues. It is definitely not the “road less traveled” but the “road most enjoyed”.

It’s relatively easy to define the requirements and skills an employee needs to possess to be considered for a particular role. But even if a group of candidates tick all the boxes from a formal job description and does well in an interview, a good portion of them will not be successful or will be, at best, mediocre performers. The truly remarkable employees, and thus successful companies, possess a variety of sometimes intangible qualities. These won’t be evident on a resume or come up in a job interview unless you know what you’re looking for. We hire not only to a specific role description, but also to those personality characteristics or traits that we know will allow that person to be successful in our organization (see the FCP Personality). Defining something similar for your company or hiring practice will help you identify those people who you are really looking for, beyond all of the bullet items on the job requisition.

The 8 Qualities of Remarkable Employees is also a great list to review – if you are an employer looking to hire or an employee looking to expand your skills or marketability, it’s worth a few minutes to review and assess your goal in hiring or being hired. One thing I would add to the list: “They Do What They Say They Are Going to Do”. You might have seen this before in a previous post here on the FCP blog, but as simple as this sounds, an employee or company can get a reputation quickly for not delivering, being difficult to work with or being unreliable through the simple things like not returning phone calls or emails promptly, not following up timely or not meeting a deadline without prior communication.

Let us know what traits or qualities you think make a remarkable employee.
